Wales · PLAN THE YEARS AHEAD

Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

The timeline uses the standard birthday cohort. An agreed deferred start or different year-group placement can change it. Academic years span two calendar years.

When can my child start school?

The usual Reception starting-age group uses children turning four by 31 August for entry that September. Confirm the offered start arrangements with your Welsh local authority or admission authority.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

Reception in Wales

Reception is the first school year in this planner, followed by Year 1. Nursery attendance is a separate stage and does not itself secure a Reception place. Welsh-medium and English-medium preferences are important to discuss when researching local schools.

Starting later within the school year

Welsh admission guidance distinguishes offered Reception places from compulsory school age. Parents offered an early place can discuss deferring within the relevant school year. A request for an entirely different age group needs a separate conversation with the admission authority.

Local admissions still matter

Use your council’s current admissions information for the application round, school preferences and start arrangements. The birthday calculation identifies a normal cohort; it does not replace the admission policy of the school you want.

The pathway after primary

The chart progresses from Reception through Years 1–6 and then Years 7–11. It includes Years 12–13 only as a possible sixth-form route. Further education and other post-16 options have their own durations and entry requirements.

When the standard timeline may differ

This calculator applies the usual starting-age group and assumes one year level per year. An agreed deferred start, a different year-group placement, repetition or a transfer can change the dates. Confirm the individual pathway with the school or admission authority; the calculator does not decide eligibility for exceptions.

Questions parents ask

Does nursery attendance secure Reception admission?

No. Follow the relevant Reception application process and check the local admission criteria.

Can I choose Welsh-medium education?

Research the Welsh-medium options and application arrangements in your local authority. The timeline itself uses the same year-level sequence.

Can I defer the offered start?

Ask the admission authority about deferral within the offered school year and compulsory-age limits. Do not assume this guarantees Reception a whole year later.

Does this account for a different year-group placement?

No. It shows the usual starting-age group. A deferred start, transfer or different placement can shift the timeline; confirm those arrangements with the school.
