Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

The timeline uses the standard birthday cohort. An agreed deferred start or different year-group placement can change it. Academic years span two calendar years.

When can my child start school?

The usual P1 starting-age group groups birthdays from 1 March through the last day of the following February. Children normally start in August, at about four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half years old.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

The March-to-February cohort

A January or February birthday usually falls in the August intake before the child turns five. A March birthday falls in the next intake. This is why the England and Wales August birthday rule must not be used for Scotland.

Deferred entry needs its own decision

A child still aged four at the school commencement date can have entry deferred for a year. The exact school start date matters. Speak to your council about the process and early learning and childcare arrangements; this planner does not infer entitlement from a fixed August comparison date.

P1 to P7, then S1 onwards

There are seven primary stages in the chart. Secondary begins at S1, with the senior phase covering S4–S6. The S6 endpoint is a continuing-school scenario, not a claim that every pupil must attend until that stage.

August ages are comparisons only

The age column uses 1 August so rows can be compared consistently. It is not your council’s first day of school and does not determine deferral eligibility. Check the published local term dates.

When the standard timeline may differ

This calculator applies the usual starting-age group and assumes one year level per year. An agreed deferred start, a different year-group placement, repetition or a transfer can change the dates. Confirm the individual pathway with the school or admission authority; the calculator does not decide eligibility for exceptions.

Questions parents ask

Why does a February birthday start before turning five?

Scotland’s normal cohort runs from March through the following February and begins in August.

Can I defer P1?

Children still four at the school commencement date can defer. Confirm the local process and childcare arrangements with the council.

Is 1 August the actual first day?

No. It is only the date used to display comparable ages. Local term dates vary.

Must every child stay to S6?

No. S6 is a possible continuing-school endpoint. Leaving eligibility and future education or training choices are separate questions.
