Northern Ireland · PLAN THE YEARS AHEAD

Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

The timeline uses the standard birthday cohort. An agreed deferred start or different year-group placement can change it. Academic years span two calendar years.

When can my child start school?

The standard September P1 intake includes children who turn four on or before 1 July. A 2 July birthday normally belongs to the following intake. Eligible families can request a one-year deferral.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

P1 and Year 1 refer to the first primary year

Northern Ireland’s first primary year is often called P1. It is Year 1 in the curriculum sequence, not Reception. Primary continues through Year 7 and post-primary begins at Year 8.

The 1 July boundary

Children born on 1 July and 2 July of the same calendar year normally fall into different intakes. This differs from the 31 August boundary in England and Wales. The calculator uses the Northern Ireland rule only.

Deferral for younger children

The Department of Education provides a deferral route for the younger children, including birthdays from 1 April to 1 July and qualifying premature births. Read the current Education Authority guidance before requesting it. We do not collect a due date or attempt to decide individual entitlement.

Post-primary and sixth form

The table follows Years 1–7, then Years 8–12. Years 13–14 are an optional sixth-form scenario. The expected end of Year 12 and a possible Year 14 finish are different milestones, so neither should be read as a guaranteed qualification date.

When the standard timeline may differ

This calculator applies the usual starting-age group and assumes one year level per year. An agreed deferred start, a different year-group placement, repetition or a transfer can change the dates. Confirm the individual pathway with the school or admission authority; the calculator does not decide eligibility for exceptions.

Questions parents ask

Is there a Reception year?

The standard first primary year is P1, also called Year 1. This planner does not insert an English Reception year.

Is 1 July included in the earlier intake?

Yes. The usual birthday cutoff includes a fourth birthday on 1 July; a 2 July birthday falls in the next intake.

Who can request deferral?

The younger children and certain prematurely born children have a statutory route. Check the Department of Education and Education Authority guidance for the detailed conditions and process.

Why does the chart go to Year 14?

Years 13–14 show an optional sixth-form continuation. They are not compulsory years for every pupil and do not cover every further-education pathway.
