England · PLAN THE YEARS AHEAD

Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

The timeline uses the standard birthday cohort. An agreed deferred start or different year-group placement can change it. Academic years span two calendar years.

When can my child start school?

The usual Reception intake is September after the fourth birthday, using a 31 August birthday cutoff. Compulsory school age is a separate rule; it does not mean every child must begin full-time Reception at four.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

Reception and compulsory education are different

Reception is the first year shown here, before Year 1. GOV.UK distinguishes the usual Reception start from compulsory school age. Discuss part-time attendance or starting later in the same school year with the school and admission authority.

Summer-born children and delayed admission

Parents of children born from April to August may request admission outside the normal age group. Starting Reception a whole year later is a different decision from beginning later within the offered school year. Ask the admission authority about the process and the year group it will offer.

Reading the academic-year timeline

A row labelled 2027–28 runs across two calendar years. Reception is followed by Years 1–6, then Years 7–11. Years 12–13 are shown as an optional sixth-form scenario; college, apprenticeships and other routes are not represented by those two school rows.

Applications and places

Apply through the appropriate local authority process even if your child attends a nursery attached to the school. Check the current timetable, preferences and oversubscription rules locally. An age result is not an offer of a place.

When the standard timeline may differ

This calculator applies the usual starting-age group and assumes one year level per year. An agreed deferred start, a different year-group placement, repetition or a transfer can change the dates. Confirm the individual pathway with the school or admission authority; the calculator does not decide eligibility for exceptions.

PUT THE RULE INTO PRACTICE

Worked examples

31 August 2023

The usual Reception intake is September 2027, in the 2027–28 academic year. Year 11 is projected for 2038–39.

The usual Reception intake is September 2028, in 2028–29. The one-day difference crosses the birthday cutoff.

Questions parents ask

Is Reception the same as Year 1?

No. Reception comes before Year 1 in the timeline.

Does my child have to attend full-time at four?

The usual intake and compulsory school age are different. Check GOV.UK and discuss part-time or deferred attendance with the school.

Can a summer-born child start Reception a year later?

Parents can request a different age-group placement. The admission authority decides; this calculator does not grant approval.

Is the final year a guaranteed graduation date?

No. Year 13 is an optional sixth-form scenario. Qualifications and alternative post-16 routes depend on the student’s choices and progress.
