PLAN THE YEARS AHEAD

Calculate your child's school timeline

Plan school entry or estimate Year 12 completion for a child already at school. Birth dates stay in this browser.

Standard eligibility is not an admission guarantee. Early entry, deferral and transfer placement need school confirmation.

When can my child start Reception in South Australia?

For standard government Reception, fifth birthdays before 1 May qualify for Term 1. Birthdays from 1 May to 31 October qualify for Term 3, with six terms of Reception. Later birthdays enter the following year's standard intake.

The two Reception intakes change the whole timeline

South Australian government schools have two Reception intakes. A mid-year start changes more than the first attendance term: it adds another calendar year containing Reception before Year 1.

April 30 versus May 1: same entry year, different Year 1

A child born on 30 April 2022 starts the standard Reception projection in Term 1 of 2027 and moves to Year 1 in 2028. A child born on 1 May 2022 starts in Term 3 of 2027, completes Reception through 2028, and reaches Year 1 in 2029. Comparing only the entry-year number would hide this important difference.

October 31 versus November 1: different starts, same Year 1

For 31 October 2022, the standard result is Term 3 Reception in 2027. For 1 November 2022, it is Term 1 Reception in 2028. Under these standard pathways both reach Year 1 in 2029. This is why the table shows intake, Reception duration and numbered grades instead of simply adding twelve to the first year.

Planning a move during the Reception period

If a move is likely during the extended Reception pathway, tell the receiving school both the intake term and the number of terms completed. Saying only that a child was in Reception in 2027 does not reveal whether they began in Term 1 or Term 3. The calculator provides a planning comparison; the school decides an actual transfer placement.

The standard South Australia rule

South Australian government Reception has two intakes: term 1 for fifth birthdays before 1 May, or term 3 for fifth birthdays from 1 May through 31 October. Later birthdays start the following year. Mid-year starters complete six terms of Reception.

Two entry points

Children whose fifth birthday is before 1 May can start in term 1. Those turning five from 1 May to 31 October can start in term 3. Birthdays after 31 October lead to the following year's intake.

Why Reception appears twice

Term 1 starters complete four terms of Reception. Mid-year starters complete six: terms 3–4 in their entry year, then a full Reception year. The calculator shows both calendar years and begins Year 1 after that.

Registering interest

Use the department's registration-of-interest process and check the relevant school zone or catchment. A calculator result is not an enrolment application. Ask the school about the specific intake and orientation arrangements.

Checking a different pathway

Children must be enrolled by age six. Discuss deferral, transfers or a proposed non-government-school intake directly with the school. This calculator models the published government-school Reception pathway; it does not assume every provider uses the same arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1 May birthday in the first intake?

No. It is in the standard mid-year group, which runs from 1 May through 31 October.

Does a mid-year start mean Year 1 starts the next January?

No. Six terms of Reception means the child completes Reception throughout the following year before moving into Year 1.

Why is the first reference age calculated on 1 July?

It makes a mid-year comparison possible without inventing a first school day. Ask the school for the actual term 3 starting date.

Do all South Australian Reception students spend the same time in Reception?

No. The standard government-school pathways shown here are four terms for a Term 1 start and six terms for a Term 3 start.

Can two children start Reception in different years and enter Year 1 together?

Yes. A Term 3 starter completes Reception in the following calendar year alongside that year's Term 1 intake, so their standard Year 1 year can be the same.

Why does the mid-year timeline have fourteen rows?

It covers fourteen calendar years because Reception appears in the initial half year and again in the following full year, followed by Years 1–12. It does not imply a repeated year or a learning delay.

Before you contact a SA school

  1. Confirm the intake term as well as the Reception year.
  2. For a mid-year starter, include the following full Reception year in your plan.
  3. Check registration-of-interest, school-zone and orientation arrangements.
  4. Ask the chosen provider about its own intake arrangements, especially outside government schools.

Keep the calculated year and intake handy when you contact the school. Ask it to confirm the plan before changing childcare, work or moving arrangements.

Standard entry rules checked 21 October 2026. Future entry projections run through 2032. Earlier birth years are supported as estimates using the current rule, not a verified historical rule. Compare the projected year level with the student’s actual year level. Confirm current enrolment requirements with your school.
