How to read your child's school timeline
Understand starting years, age columns and estimated Year 12 completion before using a timeline to plan ahead.

Start with the state where your child will attend
Choose the school’s state or territory before entering a birthday. The Australian calculator uses the selected jurisdiction’s standard entry rule. Moving interstate can change the first-entry estimate; for a child already at school, the receiving school should decide actual placement.
A starting year is different from a starting date
The result shows an estimated entry year and intake term. It does not tell you the first day your child must attend. Get that date from the school when you arrange enrolment or orientation.
What the two age columns mean
‘Age on 1 January’ is the child’s age at the beginning of the calendar year. ‘Age turning that year’ is the age reached on their birthday. Neither column replaces the local entry cutoff.
For a South Australian mid-year Reception result, the first row measures age on 1 July. The row names that date explicitly. Later rows return to 1 January. This helps compare ages without claiming a particular first day of term.
Check an older student's actual year level
Earlier birthdays are supported, but the calculation applies the current standard rule rather than reconstructing historical enrolment rules. Find the current calendar year in the table and compare the projected year level with your child’s actual year level.
If they differ, the Year 12 estimate may also differ. A later start, repeated or skipped year, interstate move or different historical intake can affect the pathway. Ask the school to confirm the expected progression rather than treating the birthday calculation as a record of your child’s schooling.
Keep the estimate in context
The final row estimates the year of Year 12 under standard progression. It is not a guarantee of graduation or a prediction of a student’s chosen education or training pathway.
Use the result as a starting point for questions: which intake applies, what is the correct year level, and are any individual approvals needed? The local calculator page links to official guidance for those discussions.
Save a useful family copy
Print / save PDF opens your browser’s print function. Download CSV creates a spreadsheet-friendly timeline. The saved result identifies Australia, the selected state or territory and the entered birthday, so you can recognise the calculation later.
The site calculates birthdays in browser memory. It does not send them to our server. A file you choose to save contains that birthday, so consider who you share the file with.
