Calculate your child's school timeline

Plan school entry or estimate Year 12 completion for a child already at school. Birth dates stay in this browser.

Standard eligibility is not an admission guarantee. Early entry, deferral and transfer placement need school confirmation.

When does my child start Pre-primary in Western Australia?

Children who turn five by 30 June enter the standard WA Pre-primary cohort. Pre-primary is the first compulsory school year; WA Kindergarten is an earlier program with a different age requirement.

Avoiding a one-year mix-up between Kindergarten and Pre-primary

Western Australia uses Pre-primary for the first compulsory school year. Kindergarten comes earlier. This calculator begins at Pre-primary so the full-time school pathway can be compared consistently with other states.

Planning the two different starting points

A child born on 30 June 2022 reaches the standard age boundary for Kindergarten in 2026 and Pre-primary in 2027. This calculator's first row is Pre-primary. If you are booking care or comparing a Kindergarten offer, label those plans separately so you do not accidentally count Kindergarten as the first compulsory school year.

A birthday just after June

A child born on 1 July 2022 has a standard Pre-primary result of 2028. The one-day difference from 30 June changes the cohort by a year. Use the full birthday rather than the child's current age: current age changes through the year, while the entry cohort is determined against the fixed boundary.

An interstate form says Kindergarten

In NSW, Kindergarten is the first school year; in WA the equivalent starting point in this timeline is Pre-primary. When discussing a transfer, describe the program actually completed and provide reports. Matching the word Kindergarten between two forms can create an incorrect assumption about year level.

The standard Western Australia rule

Pre-primary is the first compulsory school year in Western Australia. Children turn five by 30 June in that year; Kindergarten is a separate earlier program.

Kindergarten and Pre-primary

Children turning four by 30 June can attend Kindergarten. For Pre-primary, the age boundary is five by 30 June. Check which program an enrolment form refers to before comparing starting years.

From primary to secondary

Pre-primary is followed by Years 1–6, with Year 7 the beginning of secondary schooling. In Years 11 and 12, approved training or employment combinations can be alternatives to full-time school; this timeline shows the school pathway.

Local-intake areas and enrolment

Check the intended school's local-intake arrangements and ask what evidence is needed for the application. The age result does not establish residence, guarantee a preferred place or check Kindergarten immunisation requirements.

Moving to Western Australia

WA's names can be confusing when moving from a system that calls its first school year Kindergarten. Bring the child's actual school records and describe completed learning rather than relying only on the class name.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate Kindergarten entry?

The main timeline begins with Pre-primary. Kindergarten has its own earlier age rule and is explained above.

Is Pre-primary compulsory?

It is the first compulsory school year in WA. Confirm any exceptional arrangements with the education authority.

Does every child stay at school through Year 12?

The table shows a standard school pathway. Approved senior education, training and employment options can produce a different pathway.

Why does the WA calculator start at Pre-primary rather than Kindergarten?

It projects the pathway from the first compulsory school year through Year 12. Kindergarten is an earlier program and is explained separately to avoid counting it as Pre-primary.

Does a 30 June birthday count for Pre-primary?

Yes. The standard rule includes a fifth birthday on 30 June. A fifth birthday on 1 July falls into the next standard cohort.

Is a Kindergarten place an automatic Pre-primary offer?

Do not assume the application carries over. Check the school's Pre-primary enrolment process and local-intake arrangements with the school.

Before you contact a WA school

  1. Check whether each application refers to Kindergarten or Pre-primary.
  2. Read the school's local-intake arrangements before assuming a preferred place.
  3. Ask whether a fresh application is needed for the next stage.
  4. Confirm transition visits, school hours and application documents directly with the school.

Keep the calculated year and intake handy when you contact the school. Ask it to confirm the plan before changing childcare, work or moving arrangements.

Standard entry rules checked 21 October 2026. Future entry projections run through 2032. Earlier birth years are supported as estimates using the current rule, not a verified historical rule. Compare the projected year level with the student’s actual year level. Confirm current enrolment requirements with your school.
