Plan school entry or estimate Year 12 completion for a child already at school. Birth dates stay in this browser.

Standard eligibility is not an admission guarantee. Early entry, deferral and transfer placement need school confirmation.

When can my child start Prep in Queensland?

The standard Queensland Prep intake includes children who turn five by 30 June in their starting year. A July birthday falls into the following standard intake; early entry is a separate decision for the school.

Planning Prep around the June birthday boundary

In Queensland, the first year of school is Prep. Use the standard entry date to plan the move from kindy to school, then talk with the principal about readiness and any individual arrangements.

A June birthday: eligible does not mean already five on day one

A child born on 30 June 2022 reaches the standard Prep entry year in 2027. They are still four at the beginning of that year. This is why the calculator checks the birthday against the cutoff, rather than requiring every child to be five on the first day. Use the result to start an enrolment discussion, then ask how the school supports children settling into Prep.

A July birthday: distinguish the standard result from an application

For 1 July 2022, the standard result is Prep in 2028. That result does not decide an early-entry request. If you are considering the separate early-entry route, ask the principal what assessment and evidence apply before making childcare or work arrangements around 2027.

A Gold Coast–Tweed move: calculate for the receiving school

A child born on 15 July 2022 has a standard first-entry result of 2028 in Queensland but 2027 in NSW. Choosing a school across the border therefore needs more than comparing travel time. For a child already enrolled, take school records to the receiving principal; do not assume this one-year difference requires repeating or skipping a grade.

The standard Queensland rule

Children are eligible for Prep in the year they turn five by 30 June. Prep comes before Year 1. Eligibility is separate from the age at which attendance becomes compulsory.

Prep and kindy are different years

Queensland kindy is an early-childhood program before school. Prep is the first school year and comes before Year 1. Do not enter a kindy starting year as though it were Prep when comparing offers from different providers.

Eligibility and compulsory attendance

Standard Prep eligibility is five by 30 June. Compulsory school age begins at six years and six months; this is a separate requirement, not a recommendation to postpone Prep until that age.

Early entry and a later start

Some children turning five by 31 July, or transferring from equivalent schooling elsewhere, may be considered for early entry. Principal approval is required. The standard calculator does not grant that approval or automatically add a deferred year.

Preparing an enrolment enquiry

Ask the school about its enrolment process, catchment, orientation dates and the documents it wants to see. Share any previous learning or support information directly with the school. You do not need to send it to this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 30 June birthday meet the cutoff?

Yes. The standard cutoff includes 30 June. A 1 July birthday falls outside it; an early-entry application is a separate process.

Does a Prep result reserve a place?

No. Age eligibility, enrolment availability and individual approval are separate matters.

What does the Year 12 date mean?

It is the end of the ordinary school pathway if the child progresses one year level at a time. It is not a guarantee of graduation or a prediction of the child's chosen senior pathway.

Can a child start Queensland Prep at four?

Yes, the standard intake can include a child who is four at the start of the school year and turns five by 30 June. The birthday cutoff, rather than age on the first day alone, determines the standard result.

Why does a July birthday give a different answer in NSW?

NSW uses 31 July for Kindergarten, while Queensland uses 30 June for Prep. The same July birthday can therefore fall into different standard first-entry years.

Does the calculator choose whether my child is ready for Prep?

No. It applies the age rule and shows the resulting pathway. Discuss learning, communication, wellbeing and practical support needs with your child's educators and intended school.

Before you contact a QLD school

  1. Confirm that you are applying for Prep, not a kindy program.
  2. Check the intended school's catchment and application process for your proposed year.
  3. Raise early entry or a later start explicitly; a standard result does not approve either.
  4. Ask about orientation and share transition information directly with the school.

Keep the calculated year and intake handy when you contact the school. Ask it to confirm the plan before changing childcare, work or moving arrangements.

Official sources and review

Standard entry rules checked 21 October 2026. Future entry projections run through 2032. Earlier birth years are supported as estimates using the current rule, not a verified historical rule. Compare the projected year level with the student’s actual year level. Confirm current enrolment requirements with your school.
