How school entry works
The Department of Basic Education lists Grade 1 admission at age five turning six by 30 June of the admission year. The calculator uses that minimum-age boundary; a family’s actual start may be later.
Grade 1–3 form the Foundation phase, Grades 4–6 the Intermediate phase, Grades 7–9 the Senior phase, and Grades 10–12 the FET phase. School years are calendar years, so the last row is the estimated Grade 12 completion year.
Before you enrol
Grade R is a separate year before Grade 1 and is not included in this table. The BELA amendments changed compulsory schooling to include Grade R; the older wording about compulsory attendance from age seven on some admission pages should not be relied upon.
What this estimate does not decide
Apply through the relevant provincial process and confirm placement with the school. Capacity, support needs, deferred starts and exceptional admissions are separate from meeting the minimum age. Completing Grade 12 and earning the National Senior Certificate also depend on assessment requirements.

Questions parents ask
Does this recommend starting Grade 1 at five?
No. It shows the ordinary minimum-age eligibility route. Readiness and the family’s actual start should be discussed with the school.
Why is Grade R not in the table?
This calculator starts at Grade 1. Grade R has its own admission and compulsory-attendance provisions; it must not be confused with Grade 1.
Do provincial application dates change the birthday rule?
Application windows and placement processes are local administration matters. Confirm both the national age requirement and the current provincial procedure.
Is the final year a guaranteed matric pass?
No. It is a one-grade-per-year projection, not a prediction of examination results.
