Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

The standard P1 entry year is calculated from the birthday. The secondary timeline is a four-year planning scenario; individual admission and any deferred start require confirmation with MOE.

When can my child start school?

The usual P1 starting-age group runs from 2 January in one birth year through 1 January in the next. For example, children born from 2 January 2020 to 1 January 2021 register in 2026 for P1 admission in 2027.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

Why 1 January matters

A child born on 1 January belongs to the cohort immediately before a child born on 2 January of the same year. The calculator handles that boundary explicitly. Do not use a simple “birth year plus seven” calculation for a 1 January birthday.

Registration is the year before entry

The calculated P1 year is the school-entry year. The registration exercise is normally in the preceding year. Check MOE for the current phases, documents and deadlines; a projected intake year does not reserve a place.

Citizenship and admission routes

Registration phases and available routes differ for Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and international students. An age calculation does not establish admission eligibility or a place. International families should check the MOE process that applies to them before making school plans.

Six primary years, then a secondary pathway

The table shows Primary 1–6 followed by Secondary 1–4 as a planning scenario. Full Subject-Based Banding allows different subject levels. Some students have a fifth-year option; Integrated Programme and post-secondary routes have different structures. Secondary 4 is therefore a milestone, not a universal graduation date.

Deferred entry and transfers

This calculator uses the usual P1 starting-age group. It does not model an individually approved deferred start, repetition, acceleration or a transfer placement. If any of these apply, check the resulting year groups with the school or MOE rather than treating this estimate as a personal placement decision.

PUT THE RULE INTO PRACTICE

Worked examples

1 January 2021

Standard P1 entry is 2027; registration is in 2026. Primary 6 is projected for 2032 and Secondary 4 for 2036.

2 January 2021

Standard P1 entry is 2028, one intake later. Primary 6 is projected for 2033 and Secondary 4 for 2037.

Questions parents ask

Does this calculate registration or the first school year?

The main result is the P1 school-entry year. The result separately shows the preceding registration year.

Does an eligible birthday guarantee a place?

No. Registration route, citizenship or residency, available places and other admission requirements still apply.

Will every student finish after Secondary 4?

No. The chart uses a four-year secondary scenario. A fifth year, the Integrated Programme or subsequent education can change the full pathway.

Does this calculator account for an approved deferred start?

No. It calculates the usual starting-age group only. An approved deferment or different placement can shift the timeline; confirm the individual pathway with the school or MOE.
