Calculate a school timeline

Enter a date of birth to see the estimated school years ahead. Birth dates stay in this browser.

Planning estimate: Year 1 is assumed to begin in the calendar year after your child turns five. This is not a national entry cut-off. Your school confirms Year 0 / Year 1 placement, which may shift the timeline.

When can my child start school?

Children can generally start school from their fifth birthday and must be enrolled by age six. Some schools use set dates when groups of new children start (called cohort entry). A birthday alone does not establish whether the first part-year is Year 0 or Year 1.

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. Standard pathways only; confirm individual arrangements with the school.

A birthday is a starting point, not a school booking

Ask your chosen school or kura whether it welcomes new entrants individually or uses cohort entry dates. A fifth birthday during the holidays does not mean the school opens that day. The calculator shows the age window; the school confirms the actual first day.

Why this planner asks about Year 1

An initial part-year may be described as Year 0 or as new entrants. This calculator assumes Year 1 in the calendar year after the child turns five, then one level per year through Year 13. This is a planning assumption, not a national birthday cut-off. Your school confirms the actual Year 0 / Year 1 placement; a different placement shifts the timeline.

Primary, intermediate and secondary years

The timeline covers Years 1–8 in primary education and Years 9–13 in secondary education. The school a child attends can change within those stages, including an intermediate school for Years 7–8. The chart tracks year levels, not a guarantee that every year happens on the same campus.

How to read the estimate

The table is an illustrative pathway based on the stated Year 1 assumption. A later start, repetition, acceleration or transfer can change the school years shown. Year 13 is a planning milestone, not a guaranteed qualification or a compulsory leaving date.

Before you enrol

Check the school’s enrolment zone and available places, its new-entrant arrangements and what information it needs. Keep a note of the agreed first day and year placement. The result can be printed locally; you do not need to enter a child’s name.

PUT THE RULE INTO PRACTICE

Worked examples

15 May 2022

The fifth birthday is 15 May 2027 and the sixth is 15 May 2028. The school confirms a start within the permitted arrangements and the initial year placement.

Confirmed Year 1 in 2028

With one year of progression each year, Year 8 falls in 2035 and Year 13 in 2040. This is a placement-based scenario, not a birthday rule.

Questions parents ask

Does every child start on their fifth birthday?

No. Schools can use cohort entry, and holidays and individual arrangements affect the first day. Contact the school before choosing a start date.

Is Year 0 an extra compulsory year?

It is a label used for an initial part-year. Ask the school how it will record your child’s year level and when Year 1 begins.

What information do I need to enter?

Only a date of birth. No name, current year level or school details are required. The birthday stays in your browser.

How is the estimated Year 13 date calculated?

The calculator assumes Year 1 in the calendar year after the fifth birthday, then one level per year. The school confirms the actual initial placement. If that differs from the assumption, the timeline will shift.
