How school entry works

Standard primary entry is in the year a child turns six by 31 December. A November or December birthday normally belongs to the same school cohort as a January birthday in that calendar year.

Early entry may be requested for children turning six by 30 April of the following year. The calculator does not select it automatically; discuss readiness with the school and preschool teachers.

Before you enrol

Primary school lasts five years and lower secondary three. The table then illustrates a five-year upper-secondary course. Four-year and vocational programmes can follow different schedules.

What this estimate does not decide

Check teaching calendars and local arrangements with the school and region. The final year shown is a planning estimate only: exam outcomes, admissions and progression are not guaranteed.

Questions parents ask

Does a December birthday mean starting a year later?

No. Standard entry uses the sixth birthday by 31 December.

Does the estimate include early entrants?

No. It uses standard entry. The early-entry option through 30 April must be considered separately.

Does every upper-secondary programme last five years?

No. This illustrates a five-year course; other programmes can differ in duration and structure.

Is a separate calculator needed for each region?

Not for this national entry rule. Local calendars, teaching languages and enrolment arrangements still need checking.
