How school entry works
Children enter first primary in the calendar year they turn six. The boundary is 31 December: a birthday after the summer does not itself move entry into the following year.
Primary education has six courses and ESO has four. The table adds two Bachillerato courses as one possible continuation, not a compulsory stage or the only option after ESO.
Before you enrol
Autonomous communities arrange calendars and admissions procedures. Check teaching language, catchment arrangements and application windows. The national age rule does not guarantee a particular school place.
What this estimate does not decide
Early childhood education is a separate stage and is not calculated here. Repetition, acceleration, transfer from another system and individual needs require school assessment. For vocational education, check each programme’s entry requirements and duration.

Questions parents ask
Can a December-born child start while still five?
Yes. Lessons may start before the birthday because the child turns six during the entry calendar year.
Is Bachillerato compulsory?
